I began teaching in 1994 as an EYFS teacher in Somerset. Since then I have taught across the primary age range in a further three schools in North Somerset. In 1999 I became the North Somerset Numeracy Consultant for the National Numeracy Strategy. This role involved training teachers, providing in school support including demonstration lessons and writing national materials. On my return to the classroom I became an Advanced Skills Teacher for mathematics and NQT induction. I have continued to be involved in training teachers across the region with my mathematics specialism.
With Carol I run a Newly Qualified Teachers Induction Training Programme for teachers across the region. We also run training for Induction Tutors, keeping them informed of the latest developments in NQT Induction and sharing and developing best practice in the monitoring, support and challenge of our NQT colleagues. This training is cross phase, so we work with both Primary and Secondary colleagues on the issues of Induction.
As part of our Appropriate Body Services we hold regular NQT Panel monitoring meetings; assessing and monitoring the performance of NQTs across the region, responding with additional support for schools where required. We work one to one with Induction Tutors to help develop or improve practice and work 1 to 1 to coach individual NQTs who are struggling to meet the standards.
